Training is the one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a Forensic Document Examiner. There are NO institutions that can provide a degree and certify competency in Forensic Document Examination. It takes two years of full-time training in a recognized document laboratory to qualify an individual at a level of minimum competency. Because of the vast knowledge and experience that is required, training can extend beyond the two year period.
Certification
The American Board of Forensic Document Examiners (ABFDE) is the only recognized certifying body for forensic document examiners. The American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) and the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners (ASQDE) do not recognize any other certifying board for document examiners.
Experience
To be fully competent, a document examiner must be exposed to large numbers of cases over a period of many years. Having the experience and knowledge of how to examine a large, complex case is a necessity in this field.
